When you buy a ticket from Delta Airlines, you can expect to be treated fairly and courteously, but that doesn't always mean your flight gets on time. In fact, about one in five flights are canceled by Delta. Most of the time, this is due to weather conditions or mechanical issues. However, sometimes Delta Cancellation Policy cancels your flight just because they want to send other people home. If you find yourself stranded at the airport with no way to get back home, here's what you need to know about their cancellation policy.
Delta Airlines Cancellation Policy Explained
Delta Airlines is known for its customer service, but that doesn't mean there aren't times when the airline has to cancel flights. In fact, about one in five of their flights are canceled for various reasons.
If Delta cancels your flight, they will refund your money or let you fly on the next available flight. However, if you're a frequent flyer program member and have been traveling with Delta on an ongoing basis over the past year, you'll lose 25 percent of your miles. If you don't want to lose any of your miles, simply contact them before your trip and ask them not to cancel your flight without giving you a heads up.
How to Get Refunds.
Delta Airlines cancels flights for a variety of reasons, sometimes out of its own volition and sometimes due to mechanical problems. However, one reason they might choose to cancel your flight is that they need to send other people home.
If Delta Airlines Cancellation Policy cancels your flight without notice, the airline will refund your money if you're within 24 hours of departure (or have already departed) and can't get a seat on another flight. This includes frequent flyers who are currently in the air when their flight is canceled; this policy is not applicable to passengers who are in transit but have tickets that allow them to stop over at a destination before continuing on to their final destination.
If you find yourself stranded at the airport with no way to get back home, know that Delta Airlines will assist you with your situation if you're within 24 hours of departure and have a ticket that allows for an immediate return or onward travel.
What to Do if Your Flight Is Cancelled
Delta Airlines has a generous cancellation policy, but it doesn't always help you. They have a stated 48-hour cancellation window in which they'll reschedule your flight. If they cancel your flight within that window, they'll provide you with a refund or rebooking without penalty.
If your flight is canceled after that window, however, things are much more complicated. Your ticket will be completely forfeited and no refund will be offered to you. You'll also need to buy another ticket for the same amount of time and on the same itinerary as originally planned.
If your final destination is more than 500 miles away from the airport where you were originally supposed to land and there are no flights available like Delta Airlines' scheduled flights on that route, then Delta will also offer you an alternative way back home.
Delta Flights Cancellation Policy does not allow any changes to ticket information after it has been issued, so if your plans change for some reason after purchasing your ticket, it's too late!
What Happens When You're the One Who's Cancelled
Delta is not the only airline that cancels flights. If a flight is canceled, you're given a voucher for future travel that can be used on Delta, another airline, or even on your own with an alternative carrier. Delta doesn't offer any compensation to passengers who are canceled due to mechanical issues and they also don't compensate passengers whose flight was canceled due to weather conditions.
In this case, if you had booked a round-trip ticket, the airline would have just one option: refunding your money. The amount of money refunded depends on which form of payment you made: cash, credit card, or miles. For example, Delta Cancellation Policy, if you had paid using cash and chosen an economy class seat, you'd get $13 per person for each leg of your trip back home.
If you bought your ticket using miles, then the amount refunded will depend on how many miles were in your account when the flight was canceled:
- 5k-10k miles = 50% of redeemed value
- 10k-50k miles = 100% of redeemed value
